It was another glorious day at the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Wisconsin. When the Chicago winter kept snowing this spring, we were dreaming of hot summer days and constructing our barbarian warrior costumes. My girlfriend’s outfit had many compliments and stranger selfies, whereas my warhammer was my prized piece. The manly men thought it was wicked-cool – if they only knew it was just foam!
I began with two coffee cans and a dowel. I bolted them around the handle and squeezed foam in the middle, which I later carved into spikes. I added more foam onto the can lids (yes, they can still come off and become hidden storage!) and a thin layer of foam on the cans themselves. The cans are rag-painted to look like wood and for the steel I used a metallic silver base and dry-brushed black on top. The handle is real leather, but faux fur, and bound with cord.
Tools: Yoga mats, acrylic & spray paint, dowel, leather, faux fur, barge cement, nuts & bolts.
